How can we find the gradient (slope) of a line passes through the points $A(4,2)$ and $B(-1,0)$?

The gradient (slope) $m$ of a line passes through two points $A(x_{1}, y_{1})$ and $B(x_{2}, y_{2})$ is given by the following formula:

$m=\frac{y_{2}-y_{1}}{x_{2}-x_{1}}$

Applying the above formula in our case we have that

$m=\frac{0-2}{-1-4}=\frac{-2}{-5} = \frac{2}{5}$
